Are you fit and tight?

Maybe the headline doesn’t make sense to you. Just give me a few minutes and you’ll get my point. Because I see it all the time. Fit people that can run long distances, do cross country skiing, even back-to-back spinning classes. By general standards they are fit. Unfortunately, they can do basic human movements like squats. Or lunges can’t be done without holding on.

A new twist on flexibility.

Part of the reason is that they never reach that range of motion. Their activities limit them. Thus, some muscles get shorter and a parallel squat with proper form is impossible. So if you are short on time, use a full range of motion movement as your stretching. Can you say 2 birds with 1 stone?

So if you can’t squat with your thighs parallel to the floor, work on your range of motion before increasing intensity. And your strength will increase as you flexibility improves. Get working on this today. Don’t wait until you can’t get off the toilet without assistance.
