I'm sure many of you have wondered. And frankly, it probably varies a lot even with equal training. But a paper published in 2000 looked into it.
Short-term training: When do repeated bouts of resistance exercise become training?
Phillips, S.M.
Most of the initial strength gains are due to better muscle recruitment. And you could probably see a difference around week 6-8. If you train and eat properly. But this study reported that the muscle building happens right away. They observed that the muscles were loading more protein after even one session of resistance training. So you get stronger and bigger from session #1. It will just take a little longer to be able to flex the new muscles on the beach.
