Yes my friends, it is the end of cardio. It had a long run as the preferred method to lose fat and improve health. Do you have enough of those long and boring workouts? But you don’t have to log hours on a treadmill anymore. There is an option. You have a choice.
Long and slow cardio was believed to be the best way to lose fat. The reason for this is because when you exercise at 50% of your max, 50% of your calories come from stored fat. And as you increase intensity, less energy comes from fat and more from stored glucose. If you have plenty of time on your hands, you can use this approach. If you are like me, you want the best results in the shortest time.
An article that was published in 1994 (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8028502) reported that the number of calories burned during the workout are not as important. They compared continuous training (ET, slow and boring) to high intensity interval training (HIIT). They found that the HIIT participants exercised for shorter periods of time and burned fewer calories during the workouts. But the HIIT group still lost more fat. Can you believe it?
So you have a choice. Workout for long periods of time and a low intensity. Or workout for shorter periods of time at a high intensity. You decide.
